Field hockey celebrates Senior Day with win over Generals

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- All three members of the University of Lynchburg field hockey senior class scored, putting an exclamation point on Saturday's 4-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Washington and Lee that wrapped up an unbeaten conference schedule for the Hornets.

The Hornets celebrated senior midfielder Kayla Copeman (Williamsburg, Va.), senior forward Isabella Eldridge (Mount Pleasant, S.C.), and senior forward Nikki Simpao (Stafford, Va.) prior to the match, and all three came through with a goal in the win.

Sophomore forward Jackie Lerro (Royersford, Pa.) scored Lynchburg's other goal.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Lynchburg 4, Washington and Lee 1

Records: Lynchburg (13-5, 8-0 ODAC), Washington and Lee (7-9, 5-3 ODAC)

Venue: Shellenberger Field, University of Lynchburg, Lynchburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After both defenses held tight in the early going, Lynchburg broke into the scoring column in the 28th minute, when Lerro deflected a shot from sophomore midfielder Alex Rebman (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) into the cage. The Hornets took the 1-0 lead into haltime.

  • Lynchburg didn't take so long to score in the second half as Lerro centered the ball to Simpao in the box in the 43rd minute, and the ODAC's leading scorer scooped it into the cage. The Hornets added another goal a minute later as Simpao fed the ball to Eldridge just in front of the Generals' goal, and the senior scooted it home for a 3-0 lead.

  • Copeman added the fourth goal in the 58th minute, corralling her own saved shot and shoving the rebound into the cage.

  • Washington and Lee's Grace Amaden brought the score to its final tally in the 66th minute.
