No. 11 Christopher Newport holds off field hockey

Newport News, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's field hockey team couldn't find the equalizer in Wednesday night's non-conference showdown with 11th-ranked Christopher Newport, dropping a tight 1-0 game to the Captains on the road.

CNU's Ariana Samuel scored the game-winner in the first half, as the Captains defense held Lynchburg scoreless throughout.

Sophomore goalkeeper Laurel Nicks (Yorktown, Va.) made eight saves for Lynchburg.

The game finished relatively even on the stat sheet, as the Hornets held a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners while CNU out-shot Lynchburg, 13-9.

Records: No. 11 Christopher Newport 7-1, Lynchburg 4-5

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • CNU began the game as the aggressor, but Nicks made three saves in the first seven minutes to keep the Captains off the board. Lynchburg counter-attacked, earning three corners over the several minutes, but the Hornets were unable to capitalize.

  • The Captains broke through in the 31st minute when Rachel Allshouse assisted Samuel's fourth goal of the season.

  • Nicks made five more saves in the second half, but Lynchburg was unable to break through the Christopher Newport defense.

 

LOOKING AHEAD

The Hornets will return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play this weekend with a trip to Randolph-Macon. The game in Ashland, Va., is set for a 6 p.m. start.
