Box Score Ashland, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team defeated the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon, 4-2, Saturday afternoon in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup.
Sophomore forward Jackie Lerro (Royersford, Pa.) scored three of Lynchburg's four goals and assisted the other. It was Lerro's fifth-career game with three or more goals.
Senior forward Nikki Simpao (Stafford, Va.) also scored one for the Hornets and earned two assists.
All of the game's scoring came in the first half, as great defensive play told the story of the second. Sophomore goalkeeper Laurel Nicks (Yorktown, Va.) made five saves in sum for the Hornets, while R-MC netminder Gatlin Snyder made 20 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Lerro got the Hornets on the board early with an assist from Simpao.

Randolph-Macon earned a goal to tie it up, 1-1, but Lerro responded with another goal to the back of the cage, again assisted by Simpao.

The Hornets created some distance after a goal from Simpao, assisted by Lerro, brought them to a 3-1 lead in the 21st minute. Randolph-Macon cut the lead back to one three minutes later.
LOOKING AHEAD
In a respite from conference play, the Hornets will face off with Stevenson, Monday, Oct. 8 on Shellenberger Field at 4 p.m.
