Women's basketball holds off Shenandoah

Box Score

Winchester, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team used a balanced attack Sunday afternoon en route to a 74-62 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win over Shenandoah.

Five Hornets scored in double figures, led by 11 points apiece from freshman forward Erin Green (Poolesville, Md.) and senior forward Alex Allen (China Grove, N.C.).

Sophomore guards Maggie Quarles (Roanoke, Va.) and Carolyn Noe (Fairfax, Va.) and freshman guard Lizzie Davis (Knoxville, Tenn.) each added 10 points. Davis chipped in four rebounds and four assists.

Lynchburg picked up 28 of its 74 points at the free throw line, where they shot 80 percent (28-for-35).

Jordan Sondrol led all scorers with 16 points for the hosts.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Lynchburg 74, Shenandoah 62

Records: Lynchburg (3-5, 2-1 ODAC), Shenandoah (3-4, 0-3 ODAC)

Venue: Wilkins Center, Shenandoah University, Winchester, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After Lynchburg jumped to an early 4-0 lead, Shenandoah responded with an 8-0 run of its own to lead midway through the first period. Allen's layup tied the game at 10, and she scored again in the final minute of the first to help Lynchburg enjoy a 16-13 advantage after one.

  • The visitors extended their lead in the second period in large part due to success at the free throw line. Lynchburg went 10-for-12 from the stripe in the period and led 37-27 at the half after Noe's 3-pointer with 8 seconds on the clock.

  • Green kicked off the third with a 3 of her own that pushed the lead to 13, but Shenandoah began to chip away. The hosts cut the lead to 47-43 with 3:13 left in the third, but layups by Quarles and freshman forward Kate Kolb (Morris Plains, N.J.) extended the deficit again.

  • Shenandoah made another run in the fourth, culminating with Sondrol's layup that made it 62-60 with 3:13 left in the game, but Lynchburg again stepped up at the free throw line. The Hornets went 14-for-16 on freebies in the last period to seal the victory.
