HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1

  • Lynchburg jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning, sparked by a leadoff double from senior first baseman Matt Ward (Newton, N.C.). Ward and senior designated hitter Matthew Stevens (Annandale, Va.) came around on an Eagles error, and senior catcher Matthew Cotton (Charlotte, N.C.) later scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman Colin Corey (Springfield, Va.).

  • After Bridgewater got runs back in the third and fourth, Lynchburg made it 4-2 on Hylton's RBI single in the fifth.

  • Goulding tossed three scoreless innings to close the game, allowing just one hit in his third save of the season.

Game 2

  • With starters Jason Wood (Gloucester, Va.) and Andrew Berry cruising, neither team allowed a run in the first four innings of play.

  • Lynchburg drew first blood with a pair of runs in the fifth on a rally started by sophomore designated hitter Tanner Cummins' (Chesterfield, Va.) leadoff double. Cummins and senior catcher Tyler Wood (Gloucester, Va.) came around to score on a single by junior shortstop Thomas Powell (Stanardsville, Va.) for a Lynchburg lead.

  • Bridgewater tied the game an inning later, but Lynchburg reassumed the lead, 3-2, on Hylton's RBI groundout in the seventh.

  • The Eagles took advantage of two Lynchburg errors for four runs in the eighth, taking the 6-3 lead that would hold up through the end of the ballgame.
