Baseball wins big against Hampden-Sydney

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- The Lynchburg College baseball team springboarded off a huge fourth inning and cruised to an 8-2 victory over rival Hampden-Sydney Tuesday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.

Senior first baseman Brad Hylton (Danville, Va.) had two hits and three RBI for the host Hornets, including a two-run single to kick off Lynchburg's five-run fourth. Senior right fielder Will Harris (Halifax, Va.) went 2-for-5 and drove in a run, and sophomore left fielder Shawn Allen (Columbus, N.J.) doubled home a run and scored another.

The Hornets put an end to their four-game losing skid with the victory; Hampden-Sydney has lost nine of its last 10.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Lynchburg 8, Hampden-Sydney 2

Records: Lynchburg (13-15, 6-9 ODAC), Hampden-Sydney (11-13, 5-6 ODAC)

Venue: James C. Fox Field, Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Lynchburg got a fantastic pitching effort from junior right-hander Graham Boggio (Midlothian, Va.), who went 5 ⅔ innings, scattering six hits, two runs, and a pair of walks to go with four strikeouts. He set the tone with a perfect first inning.

- The Hornet offense got off to a quick start, too. Hylton and Allen drew back-to-back two-out walks in the first, and Harris singled the former around for an early 1-0 lead. Lynchburg added another run an inning later on an RBI single by senior catcher Matthew Stevens (Annandale, Va.).

- Boggio continued to cruise, getting out of a fourth-inning jam with a lineout and a strikeout, before the Hornets broke it open in the bottom half. Lynchburg drew three straight walks to start the inning, and Hylton cashed in with a two-run single to center field. Allen's double down the line scored another run, and a sacrifice fly by senior designated hitter Matt Ward (Newton, N.C.) and a Tigers error accounted for two more runs. Lynchburg led 7-0 after the fourth.

- The Hornets tacked on another run in the fifth thanks to another RBI single by Hylton.

- H-SC finally got to Boggio in the sixth, getting on the board with a leadoff double and an RBI groundout. Freshman right-hander Michael Reiskind (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) entered in relief and was promptly tagged for an RBI double to bring the score to its final standing. Reiskind didn't allow another runner past second base over 3 ⅓ innings to earn his second save of the season.
