No. 8 Randolph-Macon sweeps baseball in Sunday twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lynchburg, Va. -- The Lynchburg College baseball team mounted a late Game 2 rally but couldn't bring the tying run around to score, suffering a Sunday Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep at the hands of No. 8 Randolph-Macon, 8-2 and 7-4.

Sophomore left fielder Shawn Allen (Columbus, N.J.) had four hits on the day, while sophomore third baseman Colin Corey (Springfield, Va.) collected a double and scored a run in each game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1

  • Randolph-Macon jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, exploding for all four in a second-inning rally sparked by Rick Spiers leadoff double. The Yellow Jackets chased Lynchburg starter, junior Matt Kane (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) after four innings and five earned runs. Kane took the loss.

  • Lynchburg cut the lead to 4-1 in the third when Corey stroked a leadoff double and came home on a ground-ball double play.

  • R-MC added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings for some breathing room, and added two more in the ninth to bring the score to its final 8-2 standing.

  • Lynchburg's second run came in the sixth on an RBI single by Hylton. Jacksic and Blasiole turned in scoreless relief outings on Senior Day.

Game 2

  • The Yellow Jackets again stung early in the nightcap, getting to freshman right-hander Jason Wood (Gloucester, Va.) for four first-inning runs. R-MC added another in the third for a 5-0 advantage.

  • Lynchburg punched back in the fifth with three runs of its own, highlighted by an RBI triple off the bat of Cotton and an RBI double from Corey. Ward brought the third run in on a sacrifice fly.

  • After Randolph-Macon scored two unearned runs thanks to a Hornets error in the sixth, Lynchburg added one more in the eighth when Allen scored on a wild pitch. The game was called due to darkness after the inning.

LOOKING AHEAD

Lynchburg will continue Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at home Tuesday against Hampden-Sydney. First pitch between the old rivals on Fox Field is set for 3 p.m.
