Box Score Winchester, Va. -- The No. 20-ranked University of Lynchburg field hockey team traveled to Shenandoah University Saturday afternoon and came away with a 2-1 overtime victory for its fifth victory in a row.
Junior Alexis Brown scored two minutes into the overtime period to push Lynchburg (10-3, 3-0 ODAC) over the top in a rematch of the 2018 Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship game.
Maggie Chiappazzi scored the first goal of the day for Lynchburg on an assist from junior Jackie Lerro to put the Hornets up, 1-0, in the game's seventh minute. Lynchburg took the lead into halftime and late into the fourth quarter.
At the beginning of the fourth, Shenandoah (9-3, 2-1) answered with a goal from Taylor Hayes on an assist from Kelsey Jones to knot the game up at 1. The goal brought the Lynchburg defense's 228-minute scoreless streak to an end.
SU earned a penalty stroke in the 50th minute, but Hayes missed wide, and both defenses held the rest of regulation.
Only two minutes into the first overtime period, Brown connected for an unassisted goal to send Lynchburg home with a 2-1 win.
Lynchburg will be back in action at home Wednesday, Oct. 16 with another Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup as they take on the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan at 7 p.m. on Shellenberger Field.
