Box Score Bridgewater, Va. -- The 19th-ranked University of Lynchburg field hockey team needed a shootout to get past host Bridgewater in Saturday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup, but the Hornets claimed a 2-1 victory and clinched the top seed in this season's ODAC tournament to boot.
Jackie Lerro scored for the Hornets (14-3, 7-0 ODAC) thanks to Hayden Shockley's assist to give the visitors an 18th-minute lead, but Bridgewater's Karinne Moyer evened the score in the 35th minute. Neither team's goalkeeper yielded in the remaining 45 minutes -- BC cageminder Ali Bishop made 15 saves without allowing a goal in her 50 minutes of play -- and the game went to a shootout.
Alexis Brown, Lerro, and Emily Dudley all converted as Lynchburg won the deciding measure, three goals to two.
The win was the first shootout victory for Lynchburg's field hockey program since Nov. 4, 2006, when the Hornets topped Eastern Mennonite in a shootout to win the ODAC championship.
Despite having one more ODAC matchup on the schedule -- Wednesday, Oct. 30 versus Ferrum -- the Hornets locked up the league tournament's top seed by way of head-to-head results over one-loss teams Shenandoah and Washington and Lee.
