Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team won a 1-0 thriller over No. 12-ranked Christopher Newport Sunday afternoon at the Liberty University Field Hockey Complex.
Junior Emily Dudley scored the game's lone goal late in the first quarter off a pass from freshman Kessa Romero. It was Dudley's sixth goal of the season and Romero's fourth assist.
The Hornets (8-3) and the Captains (8-3) played an even match on the day in nearly every statistical category, with both goalkeepers totaling six saves and Lynchburg only outshooting CNU, 11-10.
Laurel Nicks played sensational defense in the Lynchburg cage and recorded her second shutout in a row and second on the 2019 campaign.
The Hornets' win evened the all-time series between the two Division III powerhouses at 9-9 and was Lynchburg's first victory since 2015.
Lynchburg continued its dominance when playing at the LU Field Hockey Complex as the Hornets are now 9-0 dating back to 2017. It was the final home game of the season for the Hornets at the Astroturf facility across town.
Lynchburg's field hockey team will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 9 when the Hornets travel to Salem to take on the Maroons of Roanoke College at 7 p.m. at Donald J. Kerr Stadium.
