Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team closed out the regular season with a 57-49 home loss to Shenandoah Saturday afternoon.
Lynchburg's two seniors led the Hornets in scoring on Senior Day, as forward Molly Shephard (Charlottesville, Va.) scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and wing Alex Allen (China Grove, N.C.) tallied nine points and three steals.
Lynchburg athletics honored the two four-year members of the program prior to tipoff.
McKenzie Mathis led Shenandoah with 13 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Allen scored the first basket of the ballgame, giving Lynchburg its only lead of the day at 2-0. SU followed with six straight points and led 12-5 after the first period.

Neither team shot well in the second as Lynchburg cut the gap by a point. Shenandoah led 22-16 at halftime.

Shephard scored eight points in the third to keep Lynchburg in the game, but the hosts didn't make their run until the fourth.

Sophomore guard Carolyn Noe (Fairfax, Va.) drilled a pair of fourth-period 3s to keep the game in striking distance. Trailing 51-41 with 3:36 remaining, Lynchburg scored eight unanswered points to cut the gap to two on a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Maggie Quarles (Roanoke, Va.) with 1:24 left to play.

Lynchburg got a stop on the defensive end but turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, and the home team was forced to foul. Shenandoah's Jordan Sondrol went 6-for-6 at the free throw stripe in the final minute to hold on for the victory.
LOOKING AHEAD
Lynchburg will look forward to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament next week, where the Hornets will be the sixth seed and have earned a bye into the quarterfinal round. Lynchburg will take on third-seeded Washington and Lee Friday, Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Va. Lynchburg took both regular-season meetings between the two teams.
