Women's basketball tops Eastern Mennonite at home

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team used a second-half charge to down Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe Eastern Mennonite, 68-61, at home Saturday afternoon.

It was Lynchburg's second-straight victory and the Hornets' sixth in their last seven games.

Freshman forward Erin Green (Poolesville, Md.) scored a team-high 18 points for Lynchburg to go with seven rebounds and six assists.

Senior forward Molly Shephard (Charlottesville, Va.) chipped in 15 points, eight rebounds, and two steals.

Freshman guard Lizzie Davis (Knoxville, Tenn.) and sophomore guard Maggie Quarles (Roanoke, Va.) added 11-point efforts. Quarles added five boards and three assists.

Chrissy Delawder scored a game-high 20 points for EMU.

With the win, the Hornets can finish no lower than sixth in the ODAC's regular-season standings, guaranteeing Lynchburg a spot in the conference tournament quarterfinals at the Salem Civic Center, Friday, Feb. 22. Seeding for the tournament is yet to be determined.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lynchburg started the game on a 10-3 run and led 15-8 after the first period, but Eastern Mennonite quickly grabbed momentum in the second. The Royals 14-0 run erased a double-digit Lynchburg lead as EMU took its first lead of the game, 25-23, with 50 seconds left in the first half. The Royals led 27-26 at intermission.

  • The teams traded blows in the third, and EMU took a 44-42 lead into the final period. Shephard and Quarles combined for 11 of Lynchburg's 16 points in the quarter.

  • The freshmen Green and Davis took over in the fourth, accounting for 15 points between them as Lynchburg took control of the game with a 9-2 period-opening run.

 

LOOKING AHEAD

Lynchburg will head to Salem, Va. on Wednesday, Feb. 13 for a 7 p.m. tip against ODAC rival Roanoke.
