Box Score 2 Lexington, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team battled in its Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener, eventually falling to rival Washington and Lee, 7-2 and 12-2, in a sweep to open league play.
Sophomore first baseman Avery Combs (Lynchburg, Va.) led the Hornets' effort with three hits on the day, while sophomore left fielder Parker Shaffer (Richmond, Va.) drove in two runs for the Hornets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1

The Generals scored single runs in the the second, fourth and fifth innings to claim the lead. W&L then put up four in the seventh to take control of the game.

Lynchburg scored twice in the eighth and then three more times in the ninth, sparked by a double from freshman center fielder Carrson Atkins (Charlottesville, Va.), to make it close, but the Generals closed out the ballgame.
Game 2

The Hornets scored twice in the first thanks to Combs' RBI double and a run-scoring single by freshman shortstop Brian Sheeder (Sutherland, Va.), but W&L responded with single runs in the first and second innings to tie the game.

W&L took the lead with three runs in the fourth and never trailed again.

The Generals broke things open with six runs in the eighth.
LOOKING AHEAD
Lynchburg will return to non-conference action this week with a Tuesday, March 12 ballgame at Mary Washington.
