HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1

  • The Hornets tagged Ferrum starter Mitch Custer for seven runs, all earned in the first three innings of the day to jump out to a 7-4 lead. Shaffer delivered an RBI triple in the bottom of the first, and Carson blooped a two-run single into short left field in the second. Atkins' two-run single in the third made it 6-4 Lynchburg, and freshman third baseman PJ Alvanos (Annapolis, Md.) capped off the rally with an RBI single.

  • Ferrum took the lead in the fifth with a five-run rally aided by a Hornets' fielding error.

  • Lynchburg tied the game at 9 with single runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Shaffer drove in Carson with an eighth-inning single, and a Panthers error brought senior pinch runner Jake Conner (Fairfield, Va.) across in the ninth to send the game to extra innings.

  • FC took the lead on an 11th-inning passed ball and ensuing fielding error and held on for the win.

Game 2

  • The Panthers got to Lynchburg right-hander Hunter Campbell (Lynchburg, Va.) for single runs in the first and second inning, but the reigning ODAC pitcher of the week settled in with five-straight scoreless innings.

  • Lynchburg's offense picked its starter up as freshman catcher Holden Fiedler (Henrico, Va.) singled home a run in the second and sophomore first baseman Avery Combs (Lynchburg, Va.) tied the game with a sixth-inning RBI single.

  • The Panthers finally broke through in the eighth inning on Josh Greenway's two-run triple, which proved the difference.
