Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team cruised past crosstown rival Randolph College by a score of 25-1 Saturday night in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup.

The win gives the Lynchburg men's lacrosse program it's 400th victory in its 40th year of existence.

Lynchburg had 17 different Hornets score to accumulate the 25 goals. Senior attackman Evan Lombardo (Franklin Park, N.J.) led the team with four goals, all in the first quarter.

Several other Hornets took advantage and scored their first-career goals. Freshman attackman Kyle Lewis (Suwanee, Ga.) collected one goal and one assist; freshmen attackmen Ryan Kenney (Hingham, Mass.) and Brett Rogers (Leesburg, Va.) each earned his first goal and one assist; freshman attackman Nate Shafer (Easton, Md.) picked up his first goal and two assists; and freshman attackman Jack Speers (Glenview, Ill.) who also collected his first goal and two assists.

Freshman face-off man Liam Zolper (Rehoboth Beach, Del.) helped Lynchburg keep the ball, going 9-for-16 at the face-off and picking up a career-high six ground balls.

The teams showed support for the HEADstrong Foundation, bringing awareness and aid to people whose lives are affected by cancer.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Hornets started the game with a nine-goal first quarter, buoyed by Lombardo's four scores.

• Senior attackman Andrew Thomas (Roswell, Ga.) opened the second quarter with a goal in the first six seconds of play thanks to an assist from senior attackman Logan Adams (Grosse Pointe, Mich.). Seven other Hornets put their marks on the board, giving Lynchburg a comfortable 17-0 lead going into halftime.

• The Hornets slowed the pace during the third quarter, only picking up six goals. Sophomore attackman Owen Thoreck (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) earned his first two goals of the season in the second half.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Hornets will travel to Winchester, Va., Saturday, March 30 to face off with the Shenandoah Hornets at 4 p.m., in an ODAC clash.
