No. 20 men's lacrosse defeats Hampden-Sydney on Senior Day

Lynchburg, Va. -- The 20th-ranked University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day with a 20-10 victory over Hampden-Sydney Saturday night on Shellenberger Field.

The Hornets close out the regular season with an overall 12-5 record, finishing second in the conference standings.

Junior midfielder Kevin Rogers (Leesburg, Va) led the Hornets with five goals, one assist, and two ground balls.

Senior attackman Andrew Thomas (Roswell, Ga.) made most of his Senior Day with three goals and three ground balls. Senior midfielder Nick Willertz (Severn, Md.) earned two unassisted goals, and senior attackman Logan Adams (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) collected one goal and three assists. Adams moved into second on Lynchburg's all-time assists leaderboard with 103 on his four-year career.

Senior goalkeeper Patrick Cornelius (Potomac, Md.) had a strong presence in the net, picking up six ground balls and racking up five saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lynchburg started the game fired up and ready to play. Rogers got the Hornets on the board early in the first quarter with two unassisted goals. He was followed by sophomore midfielder Tye Mitchell (Woodbine, Md.) and Willertz, who also scored two unassisted goals early on. By the end of the first quarter, Lynchburg had a 7-1 lead.

  • The Hornets kept the pressure on Hampden-Sydney in the second quarter. Thomas helped extend the lead with back-to-back goals. Rogers ended the half with a last second goal, assisted by Adams, and brought the score to 12-4 Lynchburg at the break.

  • Hampden-Sydney had several man-up advantages in the third quarter, but Lynchburg defense managed to shut the Tigers down and totalled 11 ground balls. The Hornets racked up five more goals from junior midfielder Brooks Poli (Downingtown, Pa.), senior attackman Evan Lombardo (Franklin Park, N.J.), freshman midfielder Josiah Martin (Lynchburg, Va.), and junior midfielder Colin Dean (Havre de Grace, Md.).

  • Freshman midfielder Nate Shafer (Easton, Md.) added the Hornets' final goal, assisted by freshman attackman Brett Rogers (Leesburg, Va.).

 

LOOKING AHEAD

Lynchburg enters ODAC tournament play as the No. 2 seed and will play the winner of the first-round contest between the Nos. 3 and 6 seeds. The semifinal and final rounds of the conference tournament will be hosted by Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va.
