Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team came away with a huge 6-2 win over Mary Washington Saturday afternoon at home on Shellenberger Field as Jackie Lerro scored two goals to lead the Hornets to victory.
Lynchburg (4-2) was down 1-0 early in the first quarter after Mary Washington's Lauren Hopkins scored a goal on an assist from Bella Urcia. The Hornets answered quickly at the beginning of the second quarter on a goal from by sophomore Brittany Claybaugh on an assist from Lerro to even the score at 1.
The Hornets did not look back, scoring four unanswered goals. Lynchburg saw goals from juniors Maggie Chiappazzi and Emma Strouse to put Lynchburg up 3-1. Freshman Kessa Romero added a goal on an assist from Strouse.
It was the junior, Lerro, that put the game out of reach for the Eagles as she scored at the end of the third quarter on an assist from Chiappazzi, putting Lynchburg up by four.
The Eagles (2-4) tried to answer with a fourth quarter goal from Hopkins, but the Hornets responded with another goal from Lerro to secure the 6-2 victory.
The University of Lynchburg field hockey team is back in action Tuesday, Sept. 24 as they travel to Stevenson University for a 7 p.m. game.
