Box Score Fayetteville, N.C. -- Senior Shawn Allen collected two base hits and drove in a run in University of Lynchburg baseball's 5-4 loss to Methodist University Sunday afternoon.
The Hornets (3-3) got out to an early 1-0 lead, as sophomore Carrson Atkins opened up the scoring for Lynchburg with an RBI-double to left center to drive home junior Parker Shaffer who singled to lead off the game. Two batters later, sophomore Garrett Jackson singled to center to drive home Atkins, giving the Hornets an early 2-0 advantage.
In the home half of the fourth inning, the Monarchs (5-5) got on the board after a lead off walk to Jacob Austin who ended up at third after two Lynchburg wild pitches. He later scored on a steal of home and a Hornet E-5 to cut the score to 2-1.
In the fifth, Methodist tied the game at 2-2 then took a 3-2 lead after a Lynchburg miscue and a safety squeeze bunt. The Hornets answered back in the top of the sixth with an RBI-single from Allen to tie the game at 3-3.
Entering the bottom of the eighth, Lynchburg had a 4-3 lead, but then a lead off walk to open the inning and a double soon after, tied the game at 4-4. The Monarchs took a 5-4 lead after a Lynchburg E-5 and then Methodist pitching set down the Hornets offense in the top of the ninth to claim the victory.
Lynchburg baseball will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 26 as the Hornets travel to Greensboro, N.C., to take on The Pride of Greensboro College with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
