Box Score Salem, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team led nearly twice as long as its opponent, but the eighth-seeded Hornets were unable to close out the upset, falling 61-57 to No. 1-seeded Emory & Henry in Thursday's quarterfinal round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament.
Lynchburg (13-14) carried the lead for 18:50 in the ballgame, including most of the second half, but could never extend the lead past two possessions.
The contest featured a total of 15 lead changes and 13 ties.
Down by seven early in the fourth, Emory & Henry (22-4) fought back to tie the game at 53-53 with 2:00 remaining and called timeout. The Wasps outscored Lynchburg, 8-4, in the remainder of the game to claim the come-from-behind victory.
The game started out tight, with neither team able to claim a big run. Erin Green nailed a 3-pointer with 39 seconds left in the period to put Lynchburg ahead, 13-10, the largest lead for either team in the first. E&H scored on the following possession to bring the deficit back to one, and neither team led by more than two points for the rest of the first half. Lynchburg carried a 30-29 advantage into the break.
E&H opened the second half with a 5-0 run, but Lynchburg recovered and took the first two-possession lead of the contest on Carolyn Noe's 3-pointer with 3 seconds remaining in the third.
The Hornets expanded the lead to seven with Abby Oguich's layup on the opening possession of the fourth period, but the lead wouldn't last. Emory & Henry chipped away at the lead to tie the game at 51 and later at 53 before making the late charge.
E&H outscored Lynchburg, 16-5, in point off turnovers despite the teams committing 13 and 14 turnovers, respectively. The Wasps also carried a 12-5 advantage in second-chance points.
Oguich and Green, Lynchburg's two All-ODAC selections, scored 13 points apiece to lead the Hornets. Oguich added four rebounds and four blocks to her line, while Green chipped in six rebounds, three steals, and a block. Green finishes the 2019-20 season with 60 blocked shots, good enough for second on Lynchburg's single-season leaderboard.
Lizzie Davis contributed 12 points and five assists for the Hornets.
Kara Stafford and Sydney McKinney led E&H with 14 points each, while Peyton Williams added 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Lynchburg finishes the season with a 13-14 record and won its first ODAC tournament game since 2017 with Monday's first-round victory over Hollins.
