Box Score Misenheimer, N.C. -- Brandon Pond threw seven innings of one-run ball to lead University of Lynchburg's baseball team past Pfeiffer, 8-2, Tuesday afternoon.
Pond's performance on the mound reached seven innings for the first time this season, and the sophomore right-hander scattered only four hits and allowed one earned run while striking out five. Offensively, junior Avery Combs led Lynchburg, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk.
Lynchburg (10-4) scored in the bottom of the first as Kinston Carson, Garrett Jackson, and Holden Fiedler each had RBI singles to put the Hornets up 3-0 before the Falcons (6-5) came to the plate.
Pfeiffer answered in the home half of the fourth on an RBI single from Bryce Marsh to cut the deficit to 3-1, but that was the Falcons' only run until a two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
In the top of the seventh, Lynchburg extended its lead to 7-1 as the Hornets sent nine men to the plate, scoring four runs on three hits and capitalizing on one Pfeiffer error.
Lynchburg scored one more in the top of the ninth and sent junior Santiago Meneses to close it out in the bottom half to seal the victory.
Pfeiffer and Lynchburg will finish their two-game series Wednesday with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
