Baseball sweeps two game set with Pfeiffer

Box Score

Misenheimer, N.C. -- University of Lynchburg baseball squeaked past Pfeiffer University 6-5 Wednesday afternoon as the Hornets escaped a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth inning to come away with the victory.

With the Hornets (11-4) leading by one run in the bottom of the ninth, junior Adam Dofflemyer struck out Pfeiffer's Austin Morton to strand the bases loaded to earn his first save of the year and lead Lynchburg to its 11th victory of the year.

The Hornets received strong pitching from its staff as Zach Potts earned his first collegiate win as the freshman allowed no earned runs on only one hit while striking out three. Sophomore PJ Alvanos went 1-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Lynchburg offense.

In the bottom of the second, the Falcons (6-6) got on the board first as a Hornet miscue resulted in the first run of the game. Lynchburg tied the game at 1-1 in the top half of the third on a Kinston Carson RBI-double to score Alvanos.

The Hornets took the lead in the fourth inning, scoring two runs on two hits and then extended their lead in the fifth with two more runs on two more hits to go ahead 5-2. The Falcons scored three more times over the next five innings but were unable to overcome the Lynchburg lead.

University of Lynchburg baseball will be back in action on Saturday, March 14 with an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader as the Hornets take on the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University with first pitch set for noon.
