Baseball splits first ODAC doubleheader with W&L

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lynchburg, Va. -- In its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season, University of Lynchburg baseball extended its win streak to six in a row on Saturday as the Hornets took Game 1, 3-1 over Washington and Lee University, but the Generals snapped that streak in Game 2, falling by the same score.

The Hornets (9-4) received a strong pitching performance from Kinston Carson as the lefty went seven strong innings and allowed just one earned run on seven hits and struck out three. Grayson Thurman came on in relief and shut the door, striking out four Generals in two innings to earn his third save.

Lynchburg scored first in Game 1 as a Garrett Jackson single led to a Washington and Lee miscue, which allowed Carson to score. With Jackson on second, junior Avery Combs doubled to right field, scoring Jackson and putting the Hornets up 2-0.

The Generals (9-3) got on the board in the third on a Bryce Burnette home run to left field, which cut the deficit in half. The Hornets answered in the bottom half of the inning after an RBI single from Carson drove home Jackson to put Lynchburg up 3-1.

Carson and the Hornets did not look back as he and Thurman quieted the Washington and Lee bats for the rest of the ballgame to come out with the win.

In Game 2, Washington and Lee struck first in the top of the second as the Generals scored twice on three hits and took advantage of a Lynchburg error to go ahead 2-0 before the Hornets stepped to the plate.

In the third, Lynchburg answered with a two-out RBI single from junior Parker Shaffer, but the Hornets had to settle for the lone run.

Hunter Campbell suffered the loss, as the senior went seven innings, allowing one earned run (three total) on just four hits while striking out six. Over the next two innings, the Lynchburg bullpen allowed just one baserunner and struck out two.

University of Lynchburg baseball will be back in action on Tuesday, March 10 as the Hornets travel to Misenheimer, N.C. to take on the Falcons of Pfeiffer University with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
