Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team stormed back from a double-digit deficit in Saturday's season-opener, but the Hornets could not quite finish the comeback, falling 70-68 to visiting Bridgewater as both teams opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.
Junior Abby Oguich led the Lynchburg effort, totaling 20 points and 11 rebounds, and senior Maggie Quarles added 16 points.
The Hornets came out of the gates hot, leading 18-10 after a period and extended the lead to 10 on Sarah Johnson's basket a minute into the second.
Bridgewater countered with a 15-0 run and never relinquished the lead.
BC extended the lead to 15 on Jada Gross' layup with 3:46 left in the third, but Lynchburg's offense responded again. The Hornets uncorked a 9-0 run late in the third, and Lynchburg again struck with six unanswered points in the fourth to cut the Eagles' lead to three. Quarles' free throw with 3:29 remaining made it 64-63, but that's as close as the Hornets could get.
Ahlia Moone scored the last of her game-best 30 points on a free throw in the waning seconds, and Bridgewater escaped with victory.
Turnovers were the bugaboo for Lynchburg on the afternoon; the Hornets committed 27 of them. Lynchburg dominated the paint with 42 points under the basket. Bridgewater made efficient use of nine offensive rebounds, scoring 13 second-chance points.
Lynchburg's women's basketball team will be back in action at home Tuesday, when the Hornets will play host to Virginia Wesleyan. Tip is set for 6 p.m., and a full webcast will be available from the Lynchburg Hornets Sports Network.
