Box Score Granville, Ohio -- The 19th-ranked University of Lynchburg field hockey team exploded for three second-half goals on its way to a 3-0 road win over Denison Saturday.
Scoreless after the first half, Jackie Lerro put the Hornets on the board with an assist from Brittany Claybaugh in the 38th minute, and Lynchburg never looked back.
Kessa Romero added a 42nd-minute goal to double the lead before third quarter's end, and the Lerro scored again, this time unassisted, in the 52nd minute for some insurance.
Meanwhile, the Lynchburg defense posted its second shutout of the 2021 campaign, highlighted by two saves from goalie Kayla Brady.
The Hornets dominated the stat line, earning 13 shots to the Big Red's three.
Lerro's brace of goals gave her 83 for her career, moving the graduate student into a tie for fourth on the Hornets' all-time leaderboard.
Lynchburg (5-3) will continue its tour of the Midwest Sunday with a game at another Ohio power, Kenyon College. The game is scheduled for noon.
