Auburn, Ala. -- University of Lynchburg's equestrian team stole a point from Auburn Friday afternoon in a 9-1 National Collegiate Equestrian Association meet defeat at the hands of the top-ranked Tigers.
Senior Taylor Herzog won the Hornets' lone point with an 89.5-point ride on the flat atop Ducati, besting her Tigers opponent, Ava Stearns, by a point to put Lynchburg on the board.
The Hornets rode well over fences to start the meet but were unable to capture any points in the process. Freshman Fallyn Belcastro had the best ride of the Lynchburg bunch, scoring out at 85 points on Encore.
Trailing 5-0, Herzog led off on the flat and turned in the team's best-scoring ride of the season in the discipline. All five Lynchburg riders topped the 80-point plateau; sophomore Kelley McCormick earned 85.5 points on Swag, senior Caroline Waters scored 83 on Nonstop, freshman Emma Schweizer was judged at 82.5 on Rex, and freshman Veronica Conroy rode to a score of 81 on Bravado. The Hornets' team total of 421.5 on the flat shattered the program's previous best team score.
Lynchburg falls to 2-1 on the young NCEA season and will face another tall task Saturday morning in Auburn with a meet against No. 7-ranked Fresno State. Start time is set for 9 a.m. Central Daylight Time.
