Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg field hockey did not disappoint in the final regular season game on Shellenberger Field this season, beating Virginia Wesleyan 7-0 on Wednesday evening.
Brittany Claybaugh got the scoring started in the first quarter after causing a turnover in Marlins territory and finding Jackie Lerro for an early goal.
Emily Dudley found Emily Yanes 5:40 later, extending Lynchburg's lead to 2-0. Yanes grabbed a second score just over two minutes later off an assist from Skylar Dise. Despite four more shots in the opening period, the Hornets took that 3-0 lead into the second quarter.
Franka Weronek played a ball in front of the cage and found Brooke Hyland wide open behind the goalie for Lynchburg's third score and Hyland's second goal of the season.
With the ninth-best assists per game mark in the country at 0.81, Lerro was destined to set up a scoring chance. She found Sydney Metz wide open and Metz buried her third goal of the season. Lerro earned another assist out of halftime as Dudley cleaned up a rebound for a goal off of Lerro's shot and the Hornets took 6-0 lead.
Lerro rounded out the scoring for Lynchburg with three minutes left in the third quarter. Caroline West setup Lerro for her 94th-career goal. Lerro's 237th-career point came from West's first-career point.
Across the field, Kayla Brady made one save en route to her sixth shutout and 12th win.
Lynchburg (12-5, 6-1 ODAC) ends the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. against Shenandoah.
