Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team opened up a double-digit lead in the second quarter and never looked back on its way to a 76-59 win over William Peace Friday evening in Turner Gymnasium.
The Hornets took a 19-16 lead into the first quarter break and started the second on a 10-0 run and never led by fewer than six again.
Sammi Sever continued her strong start to the season, totaling a team-leading 19 points to go with seven rebounds and three assists. The sophomore has scored in double figures in both of Lynchburg's early-season home games.
Sever led four Hornets in double figures; Lizzie Davis had 13 points, and Erin Green and Sarah Johnson chipped in 11 apiece. Davis added eight assists, six rebounds, and three steals to her tally; Green tallied eight rebounds and five blocks; and Johnson grabbed a team-best nine boards. Kate Kolb added nine points and eight boards off the bench.
The Hornets shot poorly from the field, going 6-for-21 from the field and 1-for-7 from 3-point territory in the first quarter, but good free-throw shooting (6-for-6) put Lynchburg ahead after 10 minutes of play. Sever had a team-high 10 points at the half.
Lynchburg kept its cushion throughout the third, bolstered by 10 in the quarter from Davis, and Sever scored eight more in the fourth to put a bow on the win.
Kiera Williams set the pace for Peace with a double-double, 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Pamela Mock led the Pacers with 17 points.
Lynchburg (2-1) will continue non-conference play on the road Tuesday with a trip to North Carolina Wesleyan. Both teams received votes in the season-opening D3hoops.com top 25 poll.
