Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- Erin Green notched a double-double and knocked off the career blocks record as University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team battled to a 45-31 win over crosstown rival Randolph in Wednesday night Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.
Green totaled a season-best 18 points to go with 13 rebounds and two blocks to lead the way for the Hornets. Her blocked shot with 3:08 remaining in the third period gave the senior 163 for her career, besting Caroline Wesley's 2004-07 career record.
The Hornets led wire to wire in the win. Green put Lynchburg ahead on its first possession with an offensive rebound and a stickback, and the Hornets started the game on a 15-3 run through the first period; Lynchburg's defense held the WildCats to 1-for-16 shooting from the field in the 10-minute quarter.
Randolph pulled a little closer in the second, stymying the Hornets offense to just seven points in the frame; Lynchburg led 22-14 at the half as Green had 10 points and six boards to set the pace.
The WildCats continued to hang around in the third, cutting the lead to as little as six. A couple of Cameron O'Neil 3s late in the period brought the Lynchburg lead down to 32-26 with 10 minutes to play.
Freshman Olivia Harris knocked down the Hornets' first 3-pointer of the game to open scoring in the fourth for some breathing room. Randolph cut the deficit to 36-30 at the 4:07 mark, but a Brooke Vetter jumper followed by Sarah Johnson's free throw, a Lizzie Davis 3, and a Green layup made for an 8-0 run that put the game out of reach in the late going.
Davis finished with seven points, six rebounds, and four assists for the Hornets, while Johnson had five points, five rebounds, and a pair of blocks.
The Hornet defense locked its crosstown rival down to the tune of an 8-for-53 (15.1 percent) shooting clip, and Lynchburg's 31 points allowed were the fewest by a Hornet women's basketball team since a 70-26 win over Hood on December 7, 2019. Lynchburg has now beaten Randolph in 21 straight games dating back to 2009.
Lynchburg (5-2, 2-1 ODAC) will look to extend its home winning streak to 13 games Saturday at 2 p.m. against Roanoke in a rematch of the 2021 ODAC championship game. The Hornets took that meeting, 67-61.
