Box Score Ashland, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's field hockey team shut out Randolph-Macon 6-0 on the road Friday night as senior Jackie Lerro recorded her first hat trick of the season.
Hornets (4-0, 4-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) got out to an early 1-0 lead in just the third minute of the game as Lerro scored her first of three goals. Although the Hornets took six more shots after Lerro's goal, the Yellow Jackets' defense held Lynchburg scoreless for the remainder of the first quarter.
In the second, Lynchburg quickly added to the lead. In the 17th minute, freshman Brooke Hyland scored off an assist from Alexis Brown to put the Hornets up 2-0. Two minutes later, Lerro found the back of the R-MC cage for her second goal of the night to extend the Lynchburg lead to 3-0.
The Hornets scored three more times in the final 10 minutes of action as Sydney Metz scored on an assist from Hayden Shockley to run the score up to 4-0 in favor of the Hornets. Then, after Lerro scored her third of night, she inserted a penalty corner to assist a Sarah Miller-Richards goal for the Hornets' final goal of the contest.
The Lynchburg offense totaled 41 shots on the night as Lerro had 12 with nine of them on frame. Kessa Romero had six, and Brooke Hyland had three.
Hornets field hockey will be back in action at home on Tuesday, March 23 at 7 p.m. as Lynchburg takes on Roanoke College in another ODAC matchup.
