Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's baseball team used a three-run eighth inning to down Hampden-Sydney College, 7-4, at home on Tuesday afternoon.
Entering the bottom of the seventh inning, with the game tied at 2-2, junior Jackson Harding reached on an error to lead off the inning, and then Kinston Carson gave the Hornets a 4-2 lead two batters later with a two-run home run to right field.
In the top of the eighth, the Tigers responded with two runs of their own on a bases-loaded walk and an RBI groundout to tie the game at 4-4. In the bottom half, the Hornets took the lead for good as Gavin Collins drew a leadoff walk and then advanced to third on a single off the bat of PJ Alvanos. Junior Holden Fiedler then hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Collins to put the Hornets up, 5-4. After Tigers pitching loaded the bases, Garrett Jackson singled to right and drove home Alvanos and freshman Ryan Long to put the Hornets up 7-4 and seal the victory.
The Hornets (12-8, 5-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) received a strong start from Brandon Pond as the junior threw four no-hit innings, struck out seven, and did not walk a batter. The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when the Tigers (6-7, 3-5) scratched across the first run of the game on a Hornets error.
Lynchburg responded with two of its own in the fifth to take the lead, but Hampden-Sydney tied the game in the sixth on an RBI single.
The Hornets used four pitchers on the afternoon as Lynchburg pitching combined for 13 punchouts and allowed only three runs on six hits. Senior Adam Dofflemyer recorded his second win of the season, going 1 2⁄3 hitless innings with a walk and strikeout. The Tigers' Kieran Conway was handed the loss.
Lynchburg baseball will be back on the diamond on Thursday, April 1 as the Hornets play host to Greensboro College. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
