Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- The Hornets 12-game home unbeaten streak came to an end Tuesday afternoon as the Hornets fell 9-4 to the Christopher Newport University Captains in non-conference action.
Lynchburg (22-11) fell behind early as CNU scored three runs in the opening frame on two hits and two Lynchburg miscues. In the bottom half of the first, the Hornets got one back on a Garrett Jackson solo shot to center field to cut the Captains lead to 3-1.
In the second, the Hornets struck again. This time it was Lynchburg that took advantage of a Captains error as Chris Martin reached safely and a throwing error allowed Riley O'Donovan to score.
The Captains (16-7) went on to score single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but Lynchburg responded in the home half of the sixth with a run on an RBI-single from freshman Gavin Collins and then another on a double play ball, cutting the deficit to 6-4.
In the top of the ninth, the Captains loaded the bases for Scott Crosson who sent a ball to right field for a bases clearing triple to put CNU on top 9-4. In the bottom half, Lynchburg put the lead off man on, but it fell victim to the double play ball and ultimately fell, 9-4.
Lynchurg starter Michael Reiskind went five innings as the senior allowed six runs, only three earned, on eight hits, one walk and four punchouts in a losing effort. Captains starter Jay Cassady also went five innings as he allowed four runs on five hits and struck out four for his second win of the season.
University of Lynchburg baseball will be back on the diamond tomorrow, Wednesday, April 21 as the Hornets host Virginia Wesleyan in an afternoon ODAC matchup. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
