Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's baseball team got back in the win column Wednesday afternoon as the Hornets defeated Virginia Wesleyan 8-2 at home.
In the bottom of the first, after Lynchburg starter Jack Bachmore set down the first three Marlins in order in the top half, the Hornet offense pieced together a three-run, two-out rally. Avery Combs drove in Kinston Carson with an RBI single, and after a Marlins error loaded the bases, PJ Alvanos singled home a pair to put Lynchburg up 3-0.
In the second, Garrett Jackson hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to bring home Ryan Long, who led off the inning with a double. In the fifth, Jackson Harding led off with a double and after he advanced to third on a fly out, Carson singled to center to in Harding. Two batters later, Avery Combs doubled to right field to bring Carson around and then with the bases loaded, Holden Fiedler worked a walk to force Combs home putting the Hornets up 7-0.
After Lynchburg tacked on a run in the seventh, the Marlins took advantage of two Hornet miscues and scored two unearned runs in the top of the eighth, but it was not enough to come back from the six-run deficit.
Bachmore stymied the Marlins offense as he only allowed three singles, fanned four and did not walk a batter over six innings of work. Lynchburg relievers Adam Dofflemyer and Grayson Thurman combined for three hits and two unearned runs over the final three innings with eight punchouts. Thurman recorded six of the eight strikeouts and four in the eighth inning.
University of Lynchburg baseball will be back on the diamond Saturday, April 24 with an ODAC doubleheader against Guilford College. Game 1 of the doubleheader is Lynchburg's Vs. Cancer Game. First pitch is set for noon.
