Box Score Carlisle, Pa. -- The 13th-ranked University of Lynchburg field hockey team jumped out to an early lead, but host Dickinson scored twice in the fourth period to claim Lynchburg's 2021 season-opener by a 2-1 score.
Freshman Franka Weronek got Lynchburg on the board in the first minute, working into the arc after a penalty corner and deflecting Jackie Lerro's ball into the back of the cage.
Lynchburg (0-1) managed five more shots in the first half but couldn't find the goal again. Meanwhile, Hornets goalie Kayla Brady kept the Red Devils off the board, making six of her eight saves in a spectacular second quarter to preserve a 1-0 Lynchburg lead at halftime.
In the 36th minute, a Kaylie Truitt defensive save helped the shutout effort, but Dickinson finally broke through in the fourth. With just under 10 minutes to go, DC's Morgan Yandow-Harding evened the score, and Ellie Werner put the Red Devils ahead 1:30 later.
Lynchburg earned a pair of last-minute corner opportunities, but the Hornets were unable to break through the defense again.
The loss snapped the Hornets' regular-season win streak at 19 games. Lynchburg will look to start another streak Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest at Lebanon Valley.
