Box Score Lexington, Va. -- Despite double-figure scoring from Erin Green and Olivia Harris, University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team opened up 2022 with a 69-56 loss at the hands of Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Washington and Lee Saturday afternoon.
Green led the way for the Hornets with 12 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks, while Harris scored 12 points and secured three steals off the bench.
Lynchburg led early in the game when Green opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, and the Hornets led 14-13 midway through the first period after the senior converted a 3-point play at the free-throw line. Neither team scored for more than 2 minutes after that, but the Generals popped off an 8-0 run to end the first with a 21-14 lead.
Washington and Lee led the rest of the way.
The Hornets began the second period with five consecutive points – a Harris 3 and a Meredith Vetter layup – but the Generals countered with five straight points of their own and maintained a single-digit lead into halftime, 33-26.
Lynchburg cut the deficit to three on three occasions in the third but could draw no closer. Taylor Gantt's six points off the bench in the fourth quarter highlighted the final 10 minutes.
Vetter finished with a season-best 11 points along with four rebounds, and Brooke Vetter had four points and 10 boards.
The loss snapped the Hornets' five-game road win streak against Washington and Lee.
Lynchburg (6-6, 2-3 ODAC) will look to get back on the winning track Tuesday when another conference rival, Virginia Wesleyan, pays a visit to Turner Gymnasium. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
