Box Score Bridgewater, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team saw its three-game win streak snapped Wednesday evening, falling 58-56 after two overtimes at Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe Bridgewater.
Kate Kolb led the Lynchburg effort with a career-high 20 points, also adding 10 rebounds and four steals. Olivia Harris dumped in 18 points off the bench, Erin Green contributed nine points and 11 rebounds, and Brooke Vetter also pulled down 11 boards for the Hornets.
Lynchburg fell behind in the early going, but the Hornets used an 8-0 run capped by Green's 3-pointer to lead 12-10 after a quarter of play. BC held the Hornets to just eight points in the second period, however, and the host Eagles carried a 25-20 lead into halftime.
Bridgewater held the lead through much of the third, leading by as many as seven, until Lynchburg surged back in the late going. Harris converted a layup to tie the game, 34-34, with 40 seconds left in the third, and after a Lizzie Davis steal, Kolb gave the Hornets their first lead of the second half with a layup.
The teams held each other scoreless for the first 5:38 of the fourth until Kolb put in another bucket for a four-point Hornets advantage. It was Lynchburg's only basket of the fourth, though, and BC's Jaden Alsberry scored with 1:59 left in regulation to tie the game at 38. They were the last points of regulation.
Harris put the Hornets ahead early in OT with a 3-pointer, and Lynchburg later extended the lead to four on another triple from the freshman. Alsberry hit a pair of free throws to pull the Eagles within a basket, and then Julia Williams scored with 9 second left in the extra period to force a second overtime at 46-46.
The teams traded baskets throughout the second OT. Davis' basket with 1:09 remaining gave the Hornets a 52-50 lead, but it was the last advantage Lynchburg gained. The Eagles scored a pair of baskets before Davis again converted to tie the game at 54 with 21 seconds remaining, and the Hornets tied it again at 56 out of a timeout on Kolb's layup.
With just 10 seconds remaining and the score tied, BC's Mary Ruth Shifflett dribbled the length of the court and floated the game-winner in with 4 seconds to play.
The Hornets (9-7, 5-4 ODAC) will look to get back on the winning track Saturday in another conference clash as Guilford pays a visit to Turner Gymnasium. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
