Box Score Virginia Beach, Va. -- The 20th-ranked University of Lynchburg field hockey team received goals from five different Hornets in Wednesday evening's 5-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference road win over Virginia Wesleyan.
Franka Weronek, Kessa Romero, and Mallory Lamb scored first-quarter goals to decide the game early for Lynchburg, and the Hornets' Brittany Claybaugh and Olivia van Metre added second-quarter goals. The defense took care of the rest, keeping the Marlins without a shot in the game.
Lynchburg held a 37-0 shot differential over the Marlins and earned 14 penalty corners to VWU's one.
Weronek got things started for Lynchburg in the third minute after the visitors earned a penalty stroke. The sophomore converted the opportunity for an early lead that the Hornets doubled in the 12th minute on Romero's goal, which was assisted by Emily Yanes.
The Hornets then made it a 3-0 game with 3 seconds remaining before the quarter break when Claybaugh fed Lamb for a last-minute goal that made the lead seemingly insurmountable after 15 minutes of play.
Claybaugh added her own goal in the 21st minute after a penalty corner, taking quick passes from Aaryn Boatwright and Ryleigh Cameron, and the Hornets added their fifth on van Metre's 30th-minute score, assisted by Sarah McCollum.
Virginia Wesleyan goalie Emma Wehr kept the Hornets off the scoreboard in the second half, making half of her game-best 10 saves in the final 30 minutes.
Lynchburg (13-3, 5-1 ODAC) made it four victories in a row with the win. The Hornets, ranked 20th in the latest NFHCA Division III poll, will take a break from ODAC competition in search for win No. 5, heading to Mary Washington Saturday at noon for a non-conference clash.
