Box Score Raleigh, N.C. -- Macey Mullins scored 20 points, Kayla Sledge notched her first-career double-double, and University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team earned its first win of the 2022-23 season, 84-71, on the road at William Peace.
Mullins went 6-for-9 from 3-point territory in just her second collegiate game, becoming just the sixth player in program history to make six or more 3s in a game and the first to do so in fewer than 10 attempts.
Sledge, also a freshman, totaled 16 points and 11 rebounds off the bench for the Hornets. Seven of those boards were on the offensive glass. Olivia Harris (11 points, four assists, four rebounds) and Kacey Kelly (10 points, five rebounds) also reached double-figure scoring.
After Lynchburg won the opening tip, Mullins knocked down a 3 on the Hornets' first possession of the game, but the Pacers quickly recovered. The game was tied at 14 through the first 10 minutes of play, but William Peace went on a pair of second-quarter runs to carry a 37-33 lead into halftime.
The second half was all Hornets. Lynchburg opened the third quarter on an 11-3 run sparked by a Harris 3-pointer and polished off by a couple of Sledge free throws. (The freshman went 6-for-8 from the stripe.) Lynchburg never trailed again. The Hornets shot 50 percent from the field (17-for-34) and 50 percent from 3 (6-for-12) in the second half.
Lynchburg (1-1) will open up Old Dominion Athletic Conference play next time out with a Wednesday 7 p.m. tip at rival Roanoke College.
