Rustburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's top-ranked equestrian team remained unbeaten in National Collegiate Equestrian Association single-discipline competition Sunday with a convincing 7-1 win over No. 4 Sacred Heart at the Lynchburg Equestrian Center at Patrick Henry Family Services Farm.
The Hornets swept the most outstanding performer honors as sophomore Emma Schweizer won the honor on the flat and freshman Abby Zemp collected the MOP over fences.
The Hornets opened up with a sweep of the flat. Zemp led things off with a 70 on FeeFee, followed by Schweizer's career-best ride of 90 atop Topi that produced a 10-point victory. Junior Kelley McCormick scored 75 on Eragon, and sophomore Lucy Metzler was judged at 75 on Caleb to polish off the 4-0 lead at intermission.
Zemp turned in the first ride of the meet for Lynchburg over fences, and it turned out to be one of the Hornets' best. The freshman scored 84 on Eragon, securing the first point over fences and clinching the victory for the Hornets. Junior Jacqueline Needle (80, Ruffino) and sophomore Fallyn Belcastro (82, Rain) also won points as Lynchburg cruised to the win.
The meet was originally scheduled for Saturday but moved to Sunday due to poor weather conditions earlier in the week that made the ring unfit for competition on the day prior. In conjunction with the schedule change, Lynchburg's originally scheduled meet with Bridgewater for Sunday was postponed to a date to be determined.
Lynchburg (3-1, 3-0 Eastern College Athletic Conference Single-Discipline) will polish off the fall portion of its NCEA schedule with a pair of meets against dual-discipline programs next weekend in Felton, Del. The Hornets will take on host Delaware State Friday before battling No. 3 Georgia Saturday.
