Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- Dylan Wolfe and Ryan Kenney scored four goals each as the No. 5-ranked University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team used a huge third quarter to pull away from No. 8 Cabrini in the Hornets' 15-9 victory Saturday afternoon.
Lynchburg also got a hat trick from Riley Mitchell and two assists from defender Henri Marindin in the winning effort.
The start wasn't so good for the Hornets. Cabrini face-off specialist Jake Huey won the opening bout and streaked down the field for the game's opening goal. The Cavaliers took a 2-0 lead at the 12:31 mark and held Lynchburg scoreless until the waning moments of the first quarter, when Marindin found Wolfe in transition for the Hornets' first goal. Cabrini scored again late in the first, however, and took a 3-1 lead into the opening intermission.
Brett Rogers scored the first of his two goals to pull the Hornets within a goal on the opening possession of the second quarter, but CU again struck for a pair and looked to be in early command with a 5-2 lead.
Then Lynchburg's offense woke up.
Wolfe found Kenney for a goal with 9:00 left until halftime, and the score sparked a 4-0 Hornets run over the next 4:30 to put Lynchburg in the lead.
The home team didn't look back after halftime. Mitchell scored the opening two goals of the third, and Kyle Lewis dumped a pair into the net shortly after to make it an 8-0 Lynchburg run around the halftime break.
After a Cavaliers score, Kenney scored twice – the second with 5 seconds before the third-quarter horn – to put Lynchburg ahead comfortably, 12-6, headed to the fourth.
Wolfe picked up his third goal off a Jake Rust assist to open the fourth-quarter scoring, and he and Kenney both added their fourth later in the period, Wolfe's Texas hat trick making it 15-7 in Lynchburg's favor. A couple late Cabrini goals brought the tally to its final standing.
After losing three of the first four face-offs, Hornets sophomore Michael Kraus was nails the rest of the way. Kraus went 15-for-24 at the X the rest of the way, and long-stick midfielders Chris Darminio and Dylan Shuster picked up seven and five ground balls, respectively. Marindin, Cole Nestor, and Josiah Martin caused a pair of turnovers each, and Patrick Moore made eight saves in the net.
With the win, Lynchburg (3-0) extended its home win streak against ranked opponents to six games. The victory also snapped a five-game losing streak against Cabrini, one that dated back to 2015.
Lynchburg's docket gets no easier next Saturday, however. The Hornets will head to the Eastern Shore of Maryland for a marquee matchup against top-ranked Salisbury.
