Baseball sweeps Dickinson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg baseball secured the sweep over Dickinson with two wins on Sunday.

The Hornets resumed Saturday's halted game in the top of the eighth, leading 8-7. On Saturday, Gavin Collins and Avery Neaves started the game with back-to-back dingers to left field. Collins drove in Cameron Lane with his third-career homer.

Neaves singled and later scored on a wild pitch in the third.

Dickinson got to Nick Mattfield for four runs in the fifth. However, the 4-4 tie did not last long. Neaves swatted his third hit of the day to lead off the bottom of the fifth, and Jackson Harding drove him in with a sacrifice fly.

Joseph Hurowitz allowed a run in the top of the sixth and Dickinson retook the lead. However, Hurowitz finished as the winning pitcher as the Hornets grabbed three runs in the bottom of the inning. Neaves tallied another RBI with a sacrifice fly, PJ Alvanos drove in Garrett Jackson and later scored on an error.

The teams agreed to halt the game after the seventh inning, but not before Dickinson scratched two runs across in the top of the frame.

After an 18-hour delay, Grayson Thurman took the mound in the top of the 8th to begin Sunday's action with an 8-7 lead. He struck out three batters on his way to the six-out save and his third of the season.

Brandon Pond took the mound for Lynchburg in the second game of the day. He struck out two in the opening frame. The Hornets scored two in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a Garrett Jackson triple and an Avery Neaves sacrifice fly.

Pond worked out of a one-out bases-loaded jam in the third. He pitched five innings overall with no runs, two hits, and four strikeouts. He has now pitched 11-straight scoreless innings.

The Hornets added five runs in the fourth on three hits. Neaves tallied two more RBI in the inning. He finished the weekend with four hits in seven at-bats, with seven RBI.

After Harding walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth and Ryan Long moved him to third with a double. Harding later scored on a wild pitch.

PJ Alvanos singled in Caleb Franklin during the eighth and gave Lynchburg a 10-run lead.

After five innings from Pond, Jack Bachmore, Angel Collazo, and Kendrick Creasey joined forces to complete the shutout. Collazo and Creasey both pitched hitless innings and the three relievers combined for five strikeouts.

The Hornets completed the sweep with a commanding 10-0 victory. They were hit by seven pitches on the weekend, and Cameron Lane lead the way with three free passes to first after getting plunked. The senior has a .500 on-base percentage on the season.

Lynchburg (6-1) hits the road Wednesday, Mar. 2 at 3 p.m. for a matchup with William Peace.
