No. 6 baseball sweeps Washington and Lee

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lynchburg Va. -- University of Lynchburg swept Washington and Lee for the third-straight time on Saturday.

Zack Potts pitched Lynchburg to a 14-3 victory in Game 1, and Nick Mattfield earned the win in Game 2.

Potts struck out the first batter he faced to begin the afternoon and went on to twirl eight innings of three-run ball with eighth strikeouts. He earned his fourth win in his longest outing of the season and the third-longest of his career.

Lynchburg's batters gave Potts plenty of run support beginning in the second inning. Ryan Long got the scoring started with a two-RBI single. Cameron Lane also drove in two runs in the inning. Lane came around to score and ended Game 1 with three hits, two runs, and four RBI.

The No. 6-ranked Hornets scored at least once an inning beginning in the fourth. Avery Neaves scored three runs and walked three times, and Holden Fiedler went 3-5 with two runs scored as well.

Baylor Cumbea struck out one while closing out the 14-3 win with a scoreless ninth.

Lynchburg poked a season-high 15 hits in the win.

Lane continued to swing a hot bat in Game 2. He went 3-for-4 in the afternoon-cap with another RBI and two more runs. He slashed .667/.750/1.000 on the day and claimed the team lead in hits on the year with 23.

Garret Jackson also had a multi-hit day in Game 2, and he opened the scoring with a double to bring Lane around.

Jackson's double sent Mattfield to the mound in the second with the lead, and the sophomore pitcher never relinquished it. He earned his third win of the year with five shutout innings. He also struck out six batters. Mattfield now sports a 2.63 ERA in five starts this year.

While Mattfield was dealing, Lynchburg kept adding runs. PJ Alvanos drove in three runs with a single in the third. After Lane drove in Riley O'Donovan in the fifth, Jack Bachmore came out to pitch the sixth and seventh. He fanned four batters with only two hits.

The Hornets added one more run before sending Grayson Thurman to the mound. In the bottom of the seventh, Logan Webster stole second and W&L's catcher sent the throw into center. Webster advanced to third on the error, and Lane scored. Webster stung two hits on the day with an RBI double.

Thurman put the game away during the final two innings but also gave up two runs. He struck out one as he closed out Lynchburg's 6-2 win.

No. 6 Lynchburg is undefeated at James C. Fox Field on the season and looks to extend its 13-game home winning streak on Wednesday, Mar. 23 at 3 p.m. against Randolph-Macon.
