Box Score Virginia Beach, Va. -- The seventh-ranked University of Lynchburg's men's lacrosse team got back on the winning track Saturday with a record-breaking 28-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win at Virginia Wesleyan.
Lynchburg's 22 assists as a team shattered the program record for helpers in a game, and the Hornets' 28 goals matched the team record in that category as well. Kyle Lewis' eight assists tied the program's single-game individual record.
Ryan Kenney and Charlie Evans scored five goals apiece to lead the way for the Hornets, Jake Rust scored four times, and Logan Lamon and Aidan Olmstead each netted hat tricks. Lewis added two goals to his eight assists, becoming just the third player in Lynchburg men's lacrosse history to reach double-digit points in a single game.
The Hornets got going early when Lewis assisted a Kenney goal just 43 seconds into the game, and Kenney scored twice more in the opening 10 minutes to get his hat trick out of the way early. Rust tacked on three goals in the final 4 minutes of the opening quarter for a 9-1 Lynchburg lead after 15 minutes.
Kenney scored twice more in the second to reach his five-goal mark at the 12:48 mark in the second. Lewis kept his passing on point, dishing his eighth assist with 7:34 before halftime on Rust's fourth goal of the day. The Hornets led 15-3 at halftime.
Lamon got the Hornets going after the break, kicking off a 10-0 Lynchburg run to start the second half. VWU finally broke the drought at the 8:00 mark in the fourth to bring the score to 26-4. The Hornets added late goals from Olmstead and Lamon to match the program's single-game scoring record.
Lynchburg dominated every facet of the stat sheet, holding a 54-18 advantage in shots and 47-21 in ground balls. The Hornets won 28 of the game's 35 face-offs – also tying a program record in that category – highlighted by an 8-for-8 effort from Tyler Kuni and Michael Kraus' 8-for-11 line. Kraus also had a game-best six ground balls.
The Hornets (6-3, 2-0 ODAC) improved to 33-3 all-time against Virginia Wesleyan with the win and pushed their win streak to 25 straight over the Marlins. Lynchburg will put its unblemished conference record on the line next Saturday at home against rival Washington and Lee at 7 p.m.
