Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- PJ Alvanos homered and drove in five runs, Garrett Jackson collected four RBI, and the No. 15-ranked University of Lynchburg baseball team extended its win streak to six games Friday with a series-opening 14-5 win over visiting York.
Alvanos put the Hornets ahead in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run single, and his three-run home run in the third lifted Lynchburg ahead for good.
Meanwhile, Hornets starter Zack Potts pitched five innings of four-run ball to earn the win. The game was a slugfest early, but Lynchburg's bullpen proved to be the difference; Angel Collazo, Travis Shumate, and Baylor Cumbea finished the game with scoreless outings.
Leading 4-3 headed to the sixth, Jackson helped the Hornets break the game open with a two-RBI double, and the Lynchburg offense put it out of reach with a seven-run seventh inning that featured Ryan Long's two-run single and another two-run single off Jackson's bat.
The Hornets and Spartans will play the second of their three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. on Fox Field.
