No. 5 baseball grabs season sweep of Marlins

Box Score

Norfolk, Va. -- University of Lynchburg baseball earned its ninth season sweep of the year with an 8-5 win over Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon.

The fifth-ranked Hornets scored in the first inning for the fifth-straight game. Cameron Lane did the initial damage for Lynchburg after leading off the game with a single and scoring on a balk. Lane ended the game 3-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Marlins quickly erased Lynchburg's lead and knocked Zack Potts out of the game in the second inning. Jack Bachmore came on in relief and delivered 4 2/3 innings of shutout ball with five Ks.

As Bachmore silenced Virginia Wesleyan's bats, Avery Neaves helped Lynchburg retake the lead in the third. He singled with two outs, and Logan Webster scored all the way from first. PJ Alvanos drove in Neaves in the next at-bat with a double. Neaves enjoyed his 12th game with at least two hits and an RBI, Webster collected his third-career three-hit game, and Alvanos cashed in his 35th run of the year.

Alvanos drove in another run during a huge ninth inning for the Hornets. Then Josh Gjormand, already with two hits, cracked a bases-loaded single and brought home all three runners.

Alvanos' and Gjormand's insurance runs proved to be valuable as the Marlins tagged Grayson Thurman for three runs in the bottom of the inning. However, Thurman eventually worked his way out of a one-out two-on jam by getting the game-tying run to pop out.

The Hornets held on for their 28th win of the season and matched their regular season win total from a season ago. Lynchburg ended up with a program-record 36 wins in 2021.

Lynchburg (28-6, 13-2 ODAC) celebrates Senior Day on Saturday, Apr. 20. The Hornets will host No. 24 Shenandoah for a crucial ODAC matchup beginning at 12 p.m.
