Box Score Newport News, Va. -- University of Lynchburg baseball scored seven-straight runs in a 9-4 win over Christopher Newport Saturday afternoon.
The fifth-ranked Hornets visited the No. 24 Captains for a midseason, out-of-conference clash.
Zack Potts toed the rubber and was dealing for six innings and fanned six batters. Potts has 48 Ks on the season.
By the time Potts was lifted in the seventh, the Hornets led 7-0. Holden Fiedler drove in the first run of the game and his first of four RBI with a groundout in the second. Avery Neaves, PJ Alvanos, and Gavin Collins strung together three-straight at-bats with RBI in the third. Collins went 2-5 on the day with a triple and has seven multihit games over the last nine contests.
In the sixth as Garrett Jackson led off first, Neaves uncorked a massive home run to put the Hornets up 7-0. Neaves has seven homers on the year and 17 in his college career.
After Michael Martorano hit a grand slam in the seventh for CNU, Travis Shumate, Jack Bachmore, and Grayson Thurman shutout the Captains over three innings with six strikeouts.
Fiedler tallied two more RBI in the ninth when he drove in Cameron Lane and Collins. Lane walked in his first plate appearance after missing six games.
The Hornets (22-5, 10-1 ODAC) welcome CNU to James C. Fox Field on Sunday, Apr. 10 at 2 p.m.
