Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- The 13th-ranked University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team had to wait an extra hour for its seventh win of the season, but Hornets got the job done with a 19-8 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win over Shenandoah on Shellenberger Field.
The visiting Hornets experienced transportation issues on the trip from Winchester, delaying the start of the game an hour to 8 p.m. The wait did not set SU back, though. After a defensive stop on the game's first possession, Shenandoah scored on its first shot just 1:04 into the game.
Lynchburg won the ensuing face-off and got on the board thanks to the first of Riley Mitchell's four goals, and the Hornets tacked on another quick goal when Ryan Kenney netted the first of his five scores at the 11:42 mark.
The host Hornets made it a 5-2 lead after goals by Kenney, Kyle Lewis, and Riley Schmidt, and Lynchburg looked to be in control, leading 6-3 after the first quarter.
Shenandoah buckled down defensively in the second, holding the hosts scoreless while uncorking a 3-0 run of its own to send the game into halftime tied, 6-6.
The second half was all Lynchburg. The Hornets scored the first six goals of the third quarter – two coming from Mitchell – to make the lead comfortable, and Lynchburg outscored the visitors by a 7-1 margin in the fourth to cruise to victory.
Freshman Andrew Miller put an exclamation point on the game with 1:25 to go. The goalie made a save and cleared the ball all on his own, streaking down the field and scoring the Hornets' 19th goal of the game. It was the second goalie goal of the season for Lynchburg.
Kenney's five goals and Mitchell's four highlighted the Hornets' stat sheet, as did a four-goal, two-assist performance from Jake Rust. Schmidt added two goals and an assist, and Lewis scored once and assisted five more to become the fourth player in program history to top the 100-assist plateau for his career. His 104 career assists sit third on Lynchburg's all-time leaderboard.
Michael Kraus dominated the face-off X, winning 20 of his 28 attempts to help the Hornets control possession. His seven ground balls were also a game-high.
Lynchburg (7-4, 2-1 ODAC) will continue conference play at home Wednesday against Guilford at 7 p.m.
