Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's field hockey team capped off a perfect week Sunday with a 2-1 home victory over Dickinson.
Brittany Claybaugh and Madison Mark scored for the Hornets, and Kayla Brady made two saves as the defense withstood more than half the final quarter in a woman-down situation to preserve the narrow lead.
The Hornets wasted no time gaining the upper hand. Lynchburg played the ball upfield immediately after the opening whistle and earned a pair of penalty corners. After the second one, Emily Yanes wound up with the ball just inside the arc and played a hard shot toward goal that Claybaugh deflected past the keeper for an early Lynchburg lead.
Lynchburg managed three more shots in the opening 15 minutes but could not add to the lead, and the second quarter went much the same way. The Hornets controlled the game but didn't expand the lead, and Dickinson earned a corner as time expired in the first half. The Red Devils made the most of the opportunity when Sammi Moonay knotted the score as time expired.
The Hornets regained control of the game early in the third, mounting several attacks in the opening moments of the third before Olivia Muir played a long ball forward to Madison Mark that the sophomore put in the back of the cage for a Lynchburg lead.
The late going turned into a battle of attrition with five cards issued in the fourth period. Despite playing two women down for periods in the ultimate quarter, Lynchburg's defense held onto the lead for its third victory of the week.
Lynchburg (6-1) will enjoy a midweek break before heading to Danville, Ky. next weekend for games against host Centre and Earlham.
