Women's basketball puts first W in the win column

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team won its first game of the season Friday with a 66-64 win over Bob Jones.

Lettie Michael led the Lynchburg contingent with 16. Macey Mullins and Sammi Sever also scored in double-figures.

The Bruins, a National Christian College Athletic Association team from Greenville, S.C., came into Turner Gymnasium and jumped out to a 15-2 lead in the first 10 minutes. Brooke Cason made the first basket of the game from either side, but it was all Bob Jones until the first-quarter break. The Hornets shot 0-7 from 3 in the first quarter.

The Bruins extended their lead to 15 early in the second, but Mullins answered back with Lynchburg's first 3 of the night. After Mullins made one, the flood gates opened from deep for the Hornets who shot 5-8 the rest of the way in the first half from beyond the arc while going on a 24-10 run. Michael nailed a corner 3 as time expired in the first half cutting the deficit to 35-34. The made basket gave Michael 13 for the first half to lead all scorers in the contest.

Bob Jones held off the Lynchburg comeback in the second half until Kayla Sledge tied things up with a jumper midway through the fourth. Lynchburg finally took a lead on a steal from Olivia Harris who fed Sever with a full-court pass for a fast-break layup.

Sever finished with 11, and it was her first double-digit effort since dropping 21 on Randolph-Macon in December of 2021. She averaged 14.8 points per game in 2021-22 in nine games before missing the remainder of the year to injury.

The Hornets never trailed again in the final 3:25, and Sledge hit a clutch layup to keep Lynchburg in front with seconds left on the board.

Sayre Brandstetter filled up the stat sheet with seven points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Sever tied Brandstetter for the team-lead in rebounding.

Lynchburg (1-1) held on for its first win of the season and already jumps into conference action with a matchup against Randolph on the road. Tipoff is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.
