Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team dropped its Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener to Randolph 64-40 in Giles Gymnasium on Wednesday.
In the return from her volleyball campaign for the Hornets, Bree Spainhour led the squad with eight points. Kacey Kelly scored seven off the bench, including four rebounds and three blocks.
Of their 64 points, the WildCats scored 30 in the paint and 16 off turnovers. Randolph outrebounded Lynchburg 37-22 using size as a difference maker down the stretch.
Though Lynchburg jump started its scoring with a pair of 3-pointers, the Hornets shot just 20% from the field in the remainder of the contest. The team went 1-27 from 3-point range after the initial two makes.
Despite the inability to find buckets, Lynchburg held the Wildcats to a nine-point lead entering halftime. To end the second quarter, Sammi Sever went to the line for three shots after a foul with 0.4 seconds on the clock.
Coming out of the break, the Hornets conceded a 12-0 run in the first five minutes of the third quarter. Randolph's Teniyah Crenshaw-Patterson scored eight points in the WildCats' furious run giving Lynchburg a 21-point mountain to climb in the final 15 minutes.
While Randolph committed 19 turnovers, the WildCats limited Lynchburg's fast break and held the Hornets to eight points off turnovers. Ranked fifth in the ODAC preseason poll, the WildCats earn their third win of the season while Lynchburg falls to 1-2.
The Hornets travel to Lexington, Va. on Saturday, Nov. 18 to participate in the Washington and Lee Invitational. Lynchburg faces Juniata on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the front half of a weekend back-to-back.
