Lexington, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team began its weekend at the Washington and Lee Invitational with a 65-58 win over Juniata College Saturday evening.
Sayre Brandstatter led the Hornets in points with 16 followed closely by Bree Spainhour with 13.
The game held close throughout the first half with three lead changes in the first quarter. Layups from Kacey Kelly and Lettie Michael kept the contest close, but the Eagles led 14-10 at the end of the first.
Macey Mullins surged the Hornet offense in the second quarter scoring on consecutive possessions to tie the game at 18. Brandstatter assisted a Darcy Ross layup to move the Hornets out in front and the first half ended with Lynchburg up 29-24. Brandstatter led the team with her season-high six assists and even led the team with eight boards and five steals.
The third quarter consisted of six lead-changes but the Hornets came out on top 49-42. Sophomore Kayla Terry hit two free throws and ended the night with a season-high nine points.
The Eagles came out hot in the fourth quarter, but Lynchburg never surrendered its lead as the contest ended 65-58. Brooke Cason, Mullins, and Kelly recorded six points in the win.
Lynchburg will continue play in the Washington and Lee Invitational Sunday, Nov. 19, taking on Salisbury at 2 p.m.
